Val d'Ultimo – in the Stelvio National Park

An insider tip for nature lovers

One of South Tyrol's most unspoilt valleys

From San Pancrazio in the east via Santa Valburg and San Nicolò to Santa Gertrude in the Stelvio National Park, Val d'Ultimo fascinates visitors with its steep meadows, deep forests and clear mountain lakes. Hand-woven larch fences point the way to the peaks of the Ortler Group. Sun-baked, traditional farms adorn the landscape. The inhabitants still treat nature with respect; alpine pastures are farmed as they have been for generations. Huts serve regional delicacies made from local products.

Whether you prefer a leisurely hike along the Ulten Farm Trail or a sporty bike ride, the best attractions are waiting to be discovered. Be enchanted by the inspiring leisure tips for the region and plan your next unforgettable adventure in the impressive Ulten Valley.

Our highlights for you

  • Schwemmalm Adventure Pond
Tree showers, water wheels, a raft – and much more. The adventure pond is an ideal destination for the whole family, offering fun and excitement for the little ones.

  • Ultner Höfeweg trail
Experience the valley up close: rustic farms that characterise the Ulten Valley. Start in Kuppelwies, on the sunny side of the valley to St. Gertraud, or on the shady side of the valley. Around 18 km, as a day hike or in two stages.

  • Ultner Urlärchen
Three ancient larch trees near St. Gertraud are considered to be Europe's oldest conifers. Legend has it that they are over 2000 years old – the inner wood makes it difficult to count the rings accurately.

  • Waterfall Hartungen
The Hartungen waterfall in St. Nikolaus, near the ancient larch trees. Particularly worth seeing from May to October – a refreshing burst of nature.

  • Ultner Talmuseum in St. Nikolaus
Gain an insight into rural life in the past. In a typical Ultner farmhouse parlour, smokehouse, bedroom and milk room, you can experience how people once lived and worked. Discover tools, old hand tools and the customs of the valley.

  • St. Helena Chapel
Unusually situated on a forest hill in the Ultental valley that is visible from afar – a short, contemplative stop with a view.

  • Eschenlohe Castle Ruins
Perched on a forest hilltop near St. Pankraz. Can be viewed from the outside, but it's worth seeing – the tower is also visible from the road.

  • House on the Stone
A fairytale curiosity in South Tyrol. Originally destroyed by flooding in 1882, the only house left standing was one built on a boulder – a story that continues to fascinate to this day.
