Ratschings – Ridnaun-Jaufen
Pure Nature in the Alps
Ratschings-Ridnaun-Jaufen in South Tyrol
The picturesque Ratschings Valley is located just a few kilometres north of Sterzing and comprises three distinctive villages: Ratschings, Ridnaun and Jaufen. Surrounded by the imposing peaks of the Stubai Alps, an authentic mountain world awaits you here at altitudes ranging from 1,000 to over 3,000 metres. The region captivates visitors with its unspoilt nature, rustic alpine pastures and a centuries-old mining tradition. It is ideal for hikers seeking peace and quiet and untouched landscapes.
A hiking paradise for every taste
The Ratschings Valley offers countless hiking tours – from the Three Lakes Hike to the crystal-clear Spronser Lakes to the imposing Wilder Freiger (3,418 m). For a more leisurely pace, head to the Kalcheralm or Fleckneralm, where South Tyrolean specialities and panoramic views await. The Ridnauner Höhenweg connects alpine pastures with magnificent views, while the Gilfenklamm gorge with its waterfalls and footbridges promises a real adventure.
Winter magic in the snow
In winter, the valley is transformed into a peaceful snow paradise. The Ratschings-Jaufen ski area offers family-friendly slopes, while ski tourers and snowshoe hikers can discover the untouched winter landscape for themselves.
Underground mining heritage & village treasures
The Ridnaun-Schneeberg exhibition mine takes you on a journey through 800 years of mining history: the mine train takes you deep into the interior of the mountain, where tunnels and reconstructed scenes bring the lives of the miners to life. Small churches and chapels bear witness to the religiousness of the region – especially the parish church of St. Ägidius with its Gothic winged altar and the pilgrimage church of Maria Schnee high above Ridnaun.
