The Gilfpromenade in Meran
Gilfpromenade – Where nature, poetry and panoramic views meet
Information, highlights and tips for the popular walking trail
The Gilf Promenade (‘Passeggiata Gilf’) is located at the foot of Mount Zeno above Merano's old town and stretches along the wild Passer Gorge (‘Gilfklamm’) up to Zenoburg Castle and the Powder Tower. The trail begins near the ‘Steinerner Steg’ (stone footbridge) and stretches for about one kilometre with an elevation gain of around 52 metres. Thanks to its sheltered south-facing location on a rocky slope, the promenade benefits from subtropical plants such as magnolias and cedars.
Literary walk
The Gilf Promenade is not only a peaceful nature trail, but also a ‘garden of poetry’. Along the path there are around 35 benches with works by contemporary poets engraved on their backrests – a project by artist Marco Nereo Rotelli in collaboration with Merano City Library. The construction of the promenade was a technical undertaking: during its construction around 1880, large masses of rock had to be blasted away and stable walls erected so that the path could be laid across the slope. The furnishings are particularly stylish: historic benches with cast-iron side panels, wrought-iron railings in typical ‘Tappeiner green’ and nostalgic lanterns give the promenade its elegant, classic character.
Activities and Relaxation
The Gilf Promenade is ideal for relaxed walks, even with prams or wheelchairs, as the path is mostly flat and family-friendly. Several rest areas along the route invite you to pause, enjoy the view of the roaring Passer River or linger in the tranquillity under subtropical trees. For art and literature lovers, the ‘Promenade of Poetry’ is a very special experience, as you will discover quotes from famous authors as you walk along. In addition, at the end of the Gilf Promenade, you can continue your walk via the Powder Tower to the famous Tappeiner Trail, which offers further magnificent views over Merano. The trail is also ideal for escaping the heat of the city during the warm summer months – the dense vegetation provides shade and a light breeze from the gorge ensures a pleasantly cooler climate.
