Historical significance of Spinges – The legend of a heroine
The quiet mountain village of Spinges lies at the gateway to the Gitschberg Jochtal ski area, but behind its idyllic facades lurks a courageous story. In 1797, during the Tyrolean freedom fights, the farm girl Katharina Lanz rose up against Napoleon's approaching troops. With a pitchfork in her hand, she stepped forward courageously, her gaze steady, her will unshakeable. The Battle of Spinges, as the elders tell it, earned her the nickname of heroine of the region – a symbolic figure for courage, resistance and the unbroken spirit of the mountain farmers.
Today, a venerable war memorial commemorates this impressive chapter in history, which makes Spinges more than just a place: it is a place of remembrance that inspires courage and draws visitors into an eventful past.
