Auer, Montan and Neumarkt
Charming Villages in South Tyrol
Discover three gems in the south of South Tyrol
Auer, Montan and Neumarkt are three charming towns in South Tyrol that are rich in history and culture. Each of these places has its own unique charm and invites visitors to enjoy an unforgettable experience.
Auer – a dreamy wine village with idyllic excursion destinations
Auer is a dreamy wine village in the fertile Etschtal valley, slightly elevated at 244 metres. This is where the valley is at its widest. In the historic town centre, characterised by the old stone walls surrounding the vineyards, stands Auer Castle, the former administrative building of the sovereign prince.
Two popular destinations are Gereuth Castle with its view of the Adige Valley and the Gampenjoch Stehaugenweg, a panoramic hike through orchards and vineyards.
Montan – The sunny plateau in the Unterland
The picturesque and peaceful village of Montan lies on a sunny south-west facing terrace, about 150 metres above the valley floor. The hamlets of Pinzon, Glen, Kalditsch, Gschnon and parts of Kaltenbrunn belong to Montan. All are scattered across the sunny plateau and nestled among well-tended orchards and vineyards. A special highlight is Montan Castle, which towers majestically above the village and offers a magnificent view of the Adige Valley.
Neumarkt – Historic charm & lively events
Neumarkt has always been an important centre for trade and administration, and remains so to this day. The picturesque town centre with its historic arcades is truly one of a kind. There are many events throughout the year, including the Laubenfest, the International Pinot Noir Symposium and the South Tyrol Marathon. A special excursion destination is the nearby Lake Kaltern, ideal for a relaxing boat trip or a picnic on the shore.
