History and sights

The symbol of the region is the sunken church tower of Graun – a magical sight with a moving history. In addition, the museum ‘1950 – Stauseebau’ (1950 – Reservoir Construction), historic bunkers and small chapels are waiting to be discovered. Tradition, festivals and Vinschgau cuisine will make your stay unforgettable.

What is the story behind the sunken church tower?

The Romanesque church tower dates back to the 14th century and belonged to the parish church of St. Catherine in the old village of Graun. It serves as a reminder of the flooding of the old village when a reservoir was created for electricity generation.

🔔 The bells
The original bells were removed before the flooding and now ring in the new church in Graun, which was built above the lake.

What does the 🏛️ Museum ‘1950 – Stauseebau’ show?

It documents the dramatic events surrounding the flooding, the lives of the displaced residents and the transformation of the region. Photographs, documents and eyewitness accounts bring history to life here.

📍 Location: In the village of Graun, not far from the church tower
⏰ Tip: Allow about 45-60 minutes for your visit – the history is an emotional journey through time that will get under your skin.

Why was Graun flooded 🌊?

💡 In 1950, Alt-Graun and Reschen were flooded to create a hydroelectric power station. Due to an energy crisis after the Second World War, three lakes were dammed to form a large reservoir. Despite protests, 150 families were forcibly resettled and 163 houses were submerged. Only the 14th-century church tower remained standing. ⛪

🏖️ Where can you swim or relax at Lake Reschen?

There are no official bathing areas.
Lake Reschen is a reservoir at an altitude of 1,498 metres, which means that the water remains quite cool even in summer (maximum 15-18°C). Swimming is possible, but more for the hardy and those seeking refreshment!

Lake Haidersee – the warmer alternative
The neighbouring Lake Haidersee is smaller, more sheltered and gets significantly warmer in summer (up to 22°C). Perfect for families! Beautiful sunbathing spots on the south shore.
