Ulten Valley Museum

Insights into rural life and folk art in the Ulten Valley

The house and its history

The Ultental Valley Museum is located in a historic building in St. Nikolaus (San Nicolò), which was originally built as a primary school in 1827. In 1969, the building was moved to a new site by museum founder Gottfried Oberthaler and opened as the Valley Museum in 1973.
In seven themed rooms, the museum presents clothing, handicraft tools, old writings, folk art and rural cultural artefacts.

What to expect

Special highlights include a smokehouse, milk room, sleeping chamber and an original smokehouse kitchen - typical elements of a historic farmhouse.
There is also a collection item of historical value: the imperial and royal hiking boot of Empress Elisabeth, who once visited spas in the valley.
Other parts of the exhibition are dedicated to the biodiversity of the valley as well as regional customs and folk art.

Opening times, admission & location

The valley museum is open seasonally from the end of April to the end of October 2025, on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm, closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Admission is Euro5 for adults and Euro3 for children (6-14 years); group and school prices as well as the UltentalCard offer additional discounts.

The museum is centrally located in St. Nikolaus, with parking spaces in the village and bus connections (line 245 from Lana).

A visit to the Ultental Valley Museum can be ideally combined with the Ultental Farm Trail, an approximately 18 km long themed trail that leads past historic farms and offers marvellous views of the valley's landscape.
