Passeier Valley – home of the Tyrolean freedom fighter
Discover the Passeier Valley (Val Passiria) – South Tyrol's unspoilt side valley between Merano and the Timmelsjoch
Between Merano and the high mountains
The Passeier Valley 🌲 is one of the most unspoilt valleys in South Tyrol, stretching from Merano to the Timmelsjoch on the Austrian border. Along its 40 kilometres, it showcases the full diversity of the Alps: from the mild, fruit tree-covered slopes near St. Martin to the wild glacier regions of the Texel Group Nature Park. The valley is not only scenic, but also steeped in history – it was here that Andreas Hofer, the legendary Tyrolean freedom fighter, was born in 1767.
The Passer, a crystal-clear torrent, runs through the valley and gives it its name. The Texel Group, South Tyrol's largest nature park with over 80 three-thousand-metre peaks, towers above it all. At the end of the valley near Moos in Passeier, the high mountains open up with the Timmelsjoch (2,509 m), one of the most spectacular Alpine passes with its architecturally impressive adventure museum.
