St. Leonhard in Unterplanitzing

St. Leonhard in Unterplanitzing

City:
Unterplanitzing (BZ)

The gothic church of St. Leonard stands at the focal point of the tiny community of Unterplanitzing. It was built upon remnants of a Roman church and was christened in the year 1429. Frescos in the Roman rotunda even date from approximately 1360. Churches that lie on a forked road were most typically named after the patron St. Leonard. Exactly at this point in Unterplanitzing, the road from the Etsch valley crosses the road that led up to the Nonberg Mountain. This original Roman cart and carriage path, was even referred to in St. Vigilius’ letter when he wrote about the via versum Agnaniam.
