In the sunny Vinschgau - between Meran and the Reschenpass - with a wonderful view of the Ortler Mountain - towers one of the mightiest and best preserved castle of South Tyrol.
Although it was originally built in 1253 by the bishops of Chur (from whom it derives its name), the Churburg is now a renaissance style noble residence with a magnificent arcaded courtyard. It is owned by the Counts of Trapp. Its armoury is world famous, the largest collection of its kind, with weapons and coats-of-arms of incomparable artistic workmanship. The Romanesque-style chapel, the Matscher hall and other sumptuous rooms contain historical objects of immense importance.
