Built in the 16th century as a residence for the Lords of Sall, Sallegg changed ownership many times and was in the hands of the noble family of Zill around the 1600s. In 1622, Sallegg was acquired by the Sepp family (after 1714, known as the Sepp von Seppenburg family) and around the1800s it was taken over by the noble Unterrichter family. In 1851, royal archduke Rainer von Österreich, Vice King of Lombardy-Venetia, acquired Castle Salleg. And from 1900-1902 his royal granddaughter, Maria Raineria Lucchesi Palli, duchess of Campofranco, had the southern tract of the building rebuilt using plans from the renowned Viennese architect Anton Weber. Years later, Castle Sallegg was inherited by the Counts of Kuenburg.
The castle wine cellar is hidden behind the beautiful historical façade. The ancient old vaulted cellar walls reach down nearly three storeys and offer ideal conditions for the fine wines, which are produced in limited amounts and are available for sale on the premises or in national and international wine specialty shops.
