Castle Boymont - Appiano/Missiano

The ruins of this once formidable castle are surrounded by woods above the small village of Missian. Unlike similar castles it can be easily reached on foot.
It was built around 1235 by the Counts of Eppan and granted as a fief to the von Boymont family (ministry officials of the Counts) who moved there from Korb. Almost two hundred years later the property was inherited by Ulrich Kässler, secretary of Duke Friedrich (nickname ‘Freddy with the empty pockets’). Around 12 years later the castle was largely destroyed by fire following an argument about inheritance and was never rebuilt, at least not until the present day owner Fritz Dellago restored the building as far as was possible in 1977.
Boymont is an example of a medieval castle built exclusively for use as a residence and is devoid of defensive characteristics. Its unusually regular rectangular ground plan is striking, and experts will notice the Romanesque and early Gothic features.
Today walkers can stop here and enjoy a typical South Tyrolean cold platter and a draught of local wine in the pretty inner courtyard (tavern open from 1st April to 1st November). Other attractions include the remains of the chapel, the round arched windows and other architectural gems. The pleasant walk from Schloss Korb takes about 25 minutes and the castle is one of the stations included in the recommended castle hikes. From here walkers can continue to Perdonig and Festenstein castle at Gaid, or walk the complete castle circuit.
