Rametz castle was mentioned as an important wine estate as long ago as 1227. It was here that Südtirol’s very first Pinot Noir vines were planted in 1860, along with other Burgundian grape varieties. The castle’s sunny location on a morainal hill overlooking Meran provides ideal conditions for grape varieties such as Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon to thrive, and the wines mature slowly in the castle cellars. The castle was renovated a century ago and now, of the original building, only the living quarters on the southern side and the tower remain.
The castle now accommodates a restaurant, a wine shop and wine museum.
