According to the legend Our Lady appeared to a mentally ill farmer, Leonhard, during the Council of Trent (Trento). In 1553 he found a small Pietà tablet here and a chapel was built on the place. It was subsequently expanded to a church in 17th century, built according to plans by the architect from Bolzano, Giovanni Batista Delai. The western façade and the abbey were built between 1719 and 1722. To commemorate the 300th anniversary of the sanctuary, the vault was frescoed by the Viennese artist Joseph Adam Mölckh. There is no original devotional image in the sanctuary.
