The Chapel at the Lake Braies was built in the first years of the 20th Century and was consecrated in 1904.

A lot of famous people have visited the chapell, for example the Archduke Franz Ferdinand with his wife.

During the hostage crisis, the cahpel served as a place of refuge for the crowded prisoners:
Adolf Hitler orderd the transfer of prominent political prisoners from the Dachau Concentration Camp to the Lago di Braies. 136 political prisoners who were of special importance to the Nazis were to be executed here. Among the prisoners were the Stauffenberg family, Prince Philipp of Hessen, Prince Loepold of Prussia, General Franz Halder, the former Austrian Chancellor Dr. Kurt von Schuschnigg, the former French Prime Minister Leon Blum, the President of the German Parliament Dr. Hjalmar Schacht, the Suffragan Bishop Johannes Neuhäuser, Fritz Thyssen and Winston Churchill's nephew.

On May 1st, 1945 the plitical prisoners were liberated an 4 days later Amerikan troops took charge of the prisoners. Shortly afterwards they were flown tho Sicily from where they returned home.
