The Ausserkirchl is a unique example of rural religious architecture as well as bearing testimony to popular religiousness during the baroque period. Completed in 1673, it consists of two chapels joined together, both of which imitate two important pilgrimage churches: the Chapel of Grace at Altötting and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. A third chapel-like building connects the two, called the Chapel of Suffering, named after sculptures in its niches representing the Passion of Christ.
