This impressive castle dating back to the 11th century was transformed into a hotel in 1885 and has been owned by the same family ever since. The position is superb, on a hillside just above Meran, surrounded by vineyards and orchards, with an excellent view of the valley. The castle hotel is also a venue for concerts. During the Second World War the castle accommodated a workshop for producing fake pound and dollar notes. Celebrities including Paul Heyse, Stefan Zweig, Rudolf Diesel and James Coburn have stayed here. The old 15th century castle chapel is still accessible.
