Schenna Castle looks back on almost 650 years of history. It is situated above the entrance to the Passeiertal valley directly opposite Tirol Castle and is a fulcrum of Südtirol’s history. It was built in the 14th century, gradually extended until the 16th century and bought by Archduke Johann of Austria in 1844, whose descendents still own it. The castle is now dedicated to the history of Tyrol with special emphasis on events which involved the Archduke and on the Tyrolean freedom fighter Andreas Hofer. Various collections are also on view, including weapons dating from the Middle Ages to 17th century firearms, and French cannons. The museum is also rich in paintings and antique furniture which formed part of the original furnishings. During the warm seasons the romantic courtyard is a venue for cultural events.
